Single 1972 ‘CROCODILE ROCK’ (Elton John)
On October 27, 1972, the single ‘Crocodile rock’ by British musician Elton John was released in the United Kingdom as a preview of his sixth album ‘Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player’. It was his first No. 1 in the USA, a position he reached in February 1973 staying for three weeks. That same month the RIAA certified it as a gold record and in 1995 it reached platinum status. A song dominated by the sound of a Farfisa organ, its lyrics nostalgically recall the early era of rock & roll, dances, romances and the freedom that teenagers breathed. Clearly inspired by rock and roll classics such as ‘Let’s Dance’, ‘Little Darling’ and ‘Speedy Gonzales’, Elton recorded all vocals, including falsetto.
LP 1983: ‘INFIDELS’ (Bob Dylan)
On October 27, 1983, ‘Infidels’, Bob Dylan’s twenty-second studio album, was released in the United States, considered the album that returned Dylan to the secular world after the ‘spiritual trilogy’ (‘Slow Train Coming’, ‘Saved’ and ‘Shot of Love’) that he produced after his conversion to Christianity. Once again Dylan charges against American society and in a fit of political conservatism criticizes the space race, industrial relocation and defends the State of Israel. The album was very well received by critics who celebrated the singer-songwriter’s ‘return to the real world’ and considered the work his best work since ‘Blood on the Tracks’. It was No. 20 in the American charts and No. 9 in the British charts.
Farin Urlaub
Today is the 61st birthday of the German singer Farin Urlaub, born in Berlin. He is known as the vocalist and guitarist of the German punk rock group Die Ärzte, formed in 1982 and is still active, except for a period between 1989 and 1993, in which its members tried with other bands without success.
To date they have released about twenty albums in Germany with hits such as ‘Schrei nach Liebe’,‘Westerland’,‘Komm zurück’, ‘Der Graf’,‘Langweilig’ o ‘Deine Schuld’.
Farin also has a solo career with five albums recorded since 2002, the year in which he published his work ‘Endlich Urlaub!’, the one who followedó ‘Am Ende der Sonne’ (2005) y ‘Die Wahrheit übers Lügen’ (2008), in which he is accompanied by his new band Farin Urlaub Racing Team. In October 2014 his most recent study installment appeared: ‘Faszination Weltraum’. In 2015 the live show was published ‘Danger!’ and in 2017 the compilation ‘Berliner Schule’.
Farin Urlaub is not his real name and is a play on words for ‘fahr in Urlaub’, (Go on holiday), because of his love of travel (He aims to visit all the countries in the world, and in 2015 he had visited 150). He is also not a typical punk, since Farin is a pacifist, teetotaler, non-smoker and vegetarian (although he eats seafood and fish).
Farin speaks seven languages: German, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Japanese; he often works for Greenpeace, ATTAC and Menschen gegen Minen (People Against Mines). He is also opposed to all ultra-right currents. In recent years he has been living in a village near Hamburg, where he has his own recording studio. On the other hand, Urlaub is a co-owner of an olive grove in Sardinia and began selling his own olive oil in August 2022.
With Die Ärzte, his most recent publications have been ‘Hell’ in 2020 and ‘Dunkel’ in September 2021.
