Canadian musician Bryan Adams, born in Kingston (Ontario), turns 66 today. Adams is the best-selling male Canadian artist in history (around 100 million) and has received dozens of awards and nominations, including 18 Juno Awards and a Grammy (out of fifteen nominations). Although some critics, due to its lyrics – often superficial – consider it a simplistic version of Bruce Springsteen, others see it, and its catchy melodies, as the key to its success.
Bryan’s parents were British citizens and his father, Conrad Adams, who came from a military family, worked in the Canadian diplomatic corps. This circumstance caused his childhood to be full of moving and traveling, studying in strict military schools in various countries such as England, Austria, Portugal and Israel. When he turned sixteen, his parents separated and Bryan went to live with his mother in Vancouver. Adams, who had learned to play the guitar a couple of years earlier, dropped out of school and used the money his parents had set aside for college to buy a grand piano. He joined various bands such as Shock and Sweeney Todd and played in the nightclubs of the area, working during the day washing dishes, walking dogs or helping in a record store.
It was here that he met drummer and songwriter Jim Vallance, with whom Bryan began a creative partnership that lasts to the present. The demos they recorded together bore fruit and in 1980, Adams signed a contract with A&M Records, where he released his first album, ‘Bryan Adams’. The album had no chart repercussions and Adams tries again with ‘You Want It, You Got It’ (1981), which does manage to enter the US charts. After touring the country playing as the opening act for groups such as Kinks, Loverboy or Foreigner, he recorded the album ‘Cuts Like a Knife’ which is his first great success.
Both the single that is extracted, the ballad ‘Straight from the heart’, and the album manage to reach the Top 10 in the United States and Canada. The hard rock sound of his first works gave way to a musical proposal more oriented to the adult audience and Adams published in November 1984, ‘Reckless’, one of his best-selling works, from which six singles were extracted, all of them hits in numerous countries. His 1985 single, ‘Heaven’ elevated him to the category of ‘master of commercial rock ballads’ and ‘Run to you’, his first Top 10 in the UK, was the song that definitively opened the European market. Another song on the album was his duet with Tina Turner,‘It’s only love’, recorded during Tina’s world tour in 1985.
In the spring of 1987 the album ‘Into the Fire’, qwhich repeated its position on the charts, although it failed to match the sales of ‘Reckless’
‘Waking Up the Neighbours’ fIt was his definitive endorsement. The single that was released, ‘(Everything I do) I do it for you’, was used as the main theme of the film ‘Robin Hood the Prince of Thieves’ and reached number 1 in numerous countries. In the United Kingdom, it spent fourteen weeks at the top of the list, something that had never happened in the forty years of history of the British charts.
It was followed by hits such as ‘Please forgive me’,‘All your love’ (con Sting y Rod Stewart), ‘Have you ever really loved a woman?’, ‘Let’s make a night to remember’, ’18 til I die’, ‘Back to you’ y ‘On a day like today’. Adams has composed songs and collaborated with major figures in the music world, including Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Roger Waters, Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson, Melanie C, and many other stars, with whom he has also sung duets.
In 2008, he released “11” (2008) and in September 2014 “Tracks Of My Tears” appeared with an original song and ten versions of pop rock classics by authors such as Lennon-McCartney, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, John Fogerty and Bobby Hebb, among others. In October 2015 “Get Up!” was released and in November 2017 a new compilation appeared, “Ultimate” with two new tracks.
On the other hand, Adams works with great success and recognition as a photographer. He specializes in celebrity portraits, including of course many of his fellow musicians such as Mick Jagger, Arcade Fire, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Robert Plant, Take That, Joss Stone, Placido Domingo, Sarah McLachlan, Celine Dion, Billy Idol, Moby, Lindsay Lohan, Amy Winehouse, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Ferry, Lenny Kravitz and Morrisse. among others.
He has shot photographs for magazines such as Vogue, Esquire, Zoo Magazine, and Harper”s Bazaar. In 2002, Bryan was invited, along with other Commonwealth photographers, to photograph Queen Elizabeth II, on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee and one of his photographs was used for a Canadian postage stamp. Alternating with his concerts, he has held numerous exhibitions around the world. Here is a sample of his work.
In March 2019 “Shine A Light” appeared and in October 2021 he released the title single of his album “So Happy it Hurts” released in March 2022. Their most recent release was “Roll With the Punches” in August 2025.
