Happy birthday, Neil Young!

80 years old today is the birthday of Canadian guitarist and singer-songwriter Neil Young, born in Toronto. In his more than 60-year career he has received all kinds of musical adjectives: “dirty rocker”, “narcissistic hippie”, “techno troubadour”, “romantic folkie” and “old bluesman”, to which we should add “godfather of grunge”, since a large part of the generation of the nineties discovered this iconoclastic and independent musician as a new hero. His longevity in the rugged world of rock and roll, exploring – not always successfully – all kinds of musical genres and maintaining to this day an unmistakable sound and style, have made him one of the most influential musicians of his generation.

Born in Toronto as the second child of the couple formed by Scott Alexander Young (a sports journalist) and Edna Blow Ragland. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Omemme, Ontario, where Neil spent his childhood. A few years later, she was diagnosed with diabetes, and contracted polio in 1951 during one of the last epidemic outbreaks of the disease in Ontario, the same one in which Joni Mitchell was infected. After his recovery, his family spent a vacation in Florida in 1962, and on his return he decided to move from Omemee to the city of Toronto. During this period Young began to show an interest in the popular music he heard on the radio.

At the age of 12, Neil”s father, who had several extramarital affairs, left his wife and filed for divorce. Due to the couple”s breakup, Neil went to live with his mother with whom he moved to live in Winnipeg (Manitoba), while his older brother Bob remained with his father. His first musical experiences were with a ukulele. He later switched to guitar and in the early sixties played with several local bands. His first stable band was The Squires, a folk-rock group that used to play in the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, with whom he achieved some local success thanks to the instrumental theme ‘The sultan’.

In a small bar in Fort William where they were recording a demo, Neil met Stephen Stills with whom he would collaborate repeatedly in the future. After leaving The Squires, he worked in several folk clubs in Winnipeg, where he became friends with Joni Mitchell. During this stage he began to compose his first folk songs, such as ‘Sugar mountain’.

He settled in his hometown and in 1966 was part of a group called Rick James and the Mynah Birds, with whom he traveled to Detroit for a recording session at the legendary Motown studios. Rick James would be famous years later for his hit ‘Super freak’. The recording was never made and the group disbanded when James was arrested for desertion. Neil and another member of the band, drummer Bruce Palmer decided to look for new airs in California.

They bought a second-hand funeral car, packed all their belongings in it, and traveled to Los Angeles. There, in a traffic jam, they met Stephen Stills who recognized the Canadians and gave them shelter. Soon after, they formed the group Buffalo Springfield with Richie Furay and Dewey Martin. Success came almost immediately thanks to the single  ‘For what it’s worth’, which was included in the second edition (1967) of their first work, ‘Buffalo Springfield’ (1966) in which Stills and Young shared the compositions. A second album, ‘Buffalo Springfield Again’ was released in late 1967, although two of Young’s three contributions, ‘Expecting to fly’ and ‘Broken arrow’, were recorded solo without the group’s help. Young’s other track on the album was ‘Mr Soul’.

Success and easy money did not help to improve the already strained internal relations of the group. There were numerous arguments and several defections, among them, the most notorious: that of Neil Young just before performing in June 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival, where he was replaced by David Crosby who, weeks later, would be expelled from the Byrds. By the time Buffalo Springfield”s third album, “Last Time Around”, appeared in 1968, the group had already been disbanded for months.

Young signed a solo contract with Reprise Records and began work on his first solo album, “Neil Young”, released on his 23rd birthday to mixed reviews. In a 1970 interview, Young himself criticized the album for being “overproduced rather than performed.”

For his next album, he recruited three musicians from a Los Angeles band called The Rockets: Danny Whitten on guitar, Billy Talbot on bass, and Ralph Molina on drums. Under the name Crazy Horse, in homage to the historic figure of Crazy Horse, the group recorded for two weeks with Neil “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”, released in May 1969. The album opens with one of Young”s most popular songs, “Cinnamon Girl”, and is dominated by two others, “Cowgirl in the sand” and “Down by the river”, which include long improvised solos from Neil on guitar.

In the summer of 1969, Neil joined the trio Crosby, Stills & Nash and performed with them as a full member at the Woodstock Festival. Although he skipped the acoustic set and in the electric set he avoided being filmed, the show made them known all over the world and the band”s second album, already with Neil Young, “Déjà Vu” (1970) was an international success, which was followed a year later, “4 Way Street”, a double live album.

But again easy success sparked old feuds between Stills and Young and, in the spring of 1971, Young left the group to concentrate on his solo career.

His new album,  ‘After the Goldrush’  (1970) with songs such as “Only love can break your heart” or “Tell me why” managed to reach number 8 in the charts and is currently valued as one of the best works of the Canadian. Although the criticism of his time was not at all benevolent, as can be seen in this one from Rolling Stone: Neil Young devotees will probably spend the next few weeks desperately trying to convince themselves that After the Gold Rush is good music. But they will be deceiving themselves. Although the album contains powerful material at first glance, none of the songs overcome a uniform gray barrier.

In 1972 ‘Harvest’, appeared, which contains the only No. 1 of Neil Young’s career, ‘Heart of Gold’. With stellar collaborations with his former bandmates Crosby, Stills and Nash, as well as James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt and the participation of the London Symphony Orchestra on a couple of tracks, the album was No. 1 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. It was also a great success in other countries around the world. The success caught Neil Young off guard, which at first motivated him to leave stardom. Young himself later wrote that ‘Heart of Gold’ had put him ‘on the road. Traveling soon became a bore, so I went out into the gutter, where you find more interesting people.’
