LP 1973: ‘DYLAN’ (Bob Dylan)
On November 16, 1973, the Columbia label released (without Dylan’s consent) the first complete album of covers of the singer-songwriter. Released with leftover takes from the sessions for ‘Selfportrait’ and ‘New Morning’, the label, in order to take advantage of the great commercial pull that one of its great stars of the 60s still retained.
He releases this compilation when he is aware that the singer-songwriter has signed with David Geffen of Asylum Records for his next works. It peaked at number 17 on the Billboard charts and yet in the UK it was Bob’s first album not to chart. When Dylan returned to Columbia two years later, one of his conditions was that they remove ‘Dylan’ from the catalog. In fact, it was never reissued on CD in either the American or British markets. In Europe and Japan it was published in the 90s.
