LP ‘Achtung Baby’ U2
On November 18, 1991, “Achtung Baby”, the seventh album by Irish rock band U2, was released. Produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, it is one of his most successful works. The reviews, after the setback suffered in its previous release, “Rattle and Hum” were in this case favorable and the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Top Albums and topped the charts of many other countries. The five singles that were released were hits and, in addition to selling more than 18 million copies to date, he won a Grammy in 1993. Cited in numerous lists of the greatest rock albums in history, in October 2011 it was reissued to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its release.
After the incredible commercial success of “The Joshua Tree” and the consequent negative reviews they received for “Rattle and Hum”, the members of U2 were on the verge of breaking up. Bono assured that they should “dream the dream again” and decided to return to their alternative rock roots for their first work in the 90s.
While in their previous albums they had dedicated themselves to exploring the music of American roots, with the new work, “Achtung Baby”, whose name came from a phrase in the film “The Producers” by Mel Brooks, they were going to take different paths. “We wanted a more European localization and sound,” said bassist Adam Clayton in an interview, so they decided to record much of the album in Berlin, where Bowie had worked with Brian Eno in the mid-seventies. And, just as Bowie emerged from Berlin with a more electronic-oriented sound, so did the Irish. In the song that opens the album, for example, “Zoo Station”, Bono”s voice is distorted to such an extent that it is hardly recognizable.
Some U2 fans had already sensed the change in sound with the version of “Night and Day” that they recorded to contribute to the Cole Porter tribute “Red Hot + Blue”. For the first time, drum machines and synthesizers appeared in a song by the Irish band. The corresponding video was directed by German filmmaker Wim Wenders, one of whose films gave its name to another of the album”s tracks, “Until the end of the world”.
Around the recording of “Achtung Baby” there was an atmosphere of uncertainty that affected the personal lives of the members of U2, as was the case of guitarist The Edge, who was going through a bitter divorce process.
This inspired some of the heartbreaking themes of failed relationships such as ‘Who’s gonna ride your wild horses’, ‘So cruel’ and ‘Love is blindness’, also reminiscent of the heartbreak songs of Roy Orbison, Scott Walker and Jacques Brel. ‘It was not the best time in life for any of us and one of the reasons for travelling to Berlin was the attempt to get away from the bad domestic environment. We had to focus on redefining the future of the band away from any distractions.’
However, Berlin, after German reunification, did not turn out to be a comfortable place either. The band arrived in the German city on October 3, 1990, the afternoon of the same official day of reunification. The historical moment lived live was intended to be a source of inspiration, but they found a depressive and gray atmosphere. “Berlin always had this magnificent underground art scene, and it was always an open city, but when the wall fell there were moments of great confusion,” said Clayton.
Producer Lanois had a strategy of recording the group in large mansions or castles, as he was convinced that this detail added a special atmosphere to the band”s sound. In Berlin, they chose Hansa Studios, where Bowie and Iggy Pop had previously recorded some of their work, and the recordings took place in a large venue that had once served as a ballroom for SS officers.
For the lyrics of ‘One’, Bono was inspired by the tensions the band was going through and his own relationship with his father. The Edge described the song as ‘a bitter, convoluted and caustic conversation between two people who have gone through hard and unpleasant times’.
On tunes such as ‘Even better than the real thing’ y ‘Mysterious ways’, The Edge experimented with several effects pedals getting very interesting riffs. In “Acrobat” Bono sings about hypocrisy, weaknesses and human incompetence. According to the band”s biographer, Bill Flanagan, Bono uses the moon in his lyrics as a metaphor for a dark woman who tries to seduce him and take him away from his ideal virtuous love, the sun. He is taken away from domestic life tempting him with an exciting nightlife and the singer tests himself how far he is able to go before returning home. “Tryin to throw your arms around the world” describes, according to him, the character staggering drunk on the way home.
In Dublin, in a more relaxed atmosphere and, following Lanois” method, in a rented mansion by the sea where an improvised recording studio had to be installed, the rest of the songs on the album were finished in February 1991, “The fly”, the first single that was released a month before the album”s release, “Ultraviolet (Light my way)” which describes a tense and uneasy relationship and the album”s opening track, “Zoo station”, a name taken from a Berlin metro station.
It was in these sessions that Bono, criticized by some media for taking himself too seriously, developed a new alter ego with the character The Fly who, sheathed in leather and behind dark glasses, pretended to be a parody of a typical rock star. With this characterization the singer would be shown in the subsequent public appearances of the group and in the Zoo TV Tour, held in 1992 and 93 to promote the album.
The cover design was also intended to show the band”s change of direction using a multicolored image in contrast to the serious and mostly monochromatic previous covers, also designed by Steve Averill. The first photographs taken in Berlin, most of them in black and white, did not please Bono as he did not believe that they conveyed the intended change of course. A new colour session was prepared in Tenerife, taking advantage of the carnival festivities and another in Morocco.
Finally, in Dublin, another session was held in which they took a photo of John Clayton naked (in the American editions his genitals appeared under a fig leaf or covered with a black “x”) and another of a cow on an Irish farm, both candidates to be the defining cover image. Another possible option was the photograph of the group inside a Trabant, a typical car model of the extinct GDR. Finally, it was decided to make a montage with a selection of all the sessions, alternating color and black and white photos.
In short, “Achtung Baby” was one of the most satisfying reinventions carried out by a group of U2″s stature, thanks to which they defined their path for the new decade.

LP 1974: ‘THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY’ (Genesis)
On November 18, 1974, the sixth studio album by British progressive rock band Genesis was released. Released in double vinyl format, it was recorded at Island Studios in London and at Geadley Grange (Wales) under production by John Burns and was the last album of the band in which they had Peter Gabriel, who would leave the band after the subsequent promotional tour.
Conceived as a conceptual work or rock opera, the album tells the story of life in New York City of a juvenile delinquent of Puerto Rican origin named Rael. One of Genesis” most popular albums, it is for many of their fans a cult record and the musical zenith of the band. It was number 10 in the British charts and in the United States it reached number 41.
