Happy birthday, Silvio Rodríguez!
Today is the 79th birthday of Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodrguez, born in San Antonio de los Baos (Cuba). He is a characteristic exponent of the music of his country that emerged with the Cuban Revolution, known as the Nueva Trova Cubana, which he shares with other renowned singer-songwriters such as Pablo Milanés, Noel Nicola, and Vicente Feli.

His childhood was developed during the transition of the government of Fulgencio Batista and the beginning of the Cuban Revolution, collaborating for the latter from its beginnings, as an educator, cartoonist, writer, composer, soldier and politician. He began his musical career as a television host, then joined the Sound Experimentation Group directed by Leo Brouwer, and finally consolidated as a soloist. Many of his songs are already classics of Latin American music such as “Playa Girón” (1974), “Te doy una canción”, “Ojala” (1978) “Rabo de nube” (1980), “Unicornio” and “La maza” (1982).

From a musical and political point of view, Silvio is a symbol of the Latin American left. He has published about twenty albums and his most recent work, “Segunda cita” (2010) is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. With more than four decades of musical career and more than twenty albums, he is currently one of the most important international singer-songwriters in the Spanish language.
At the end of the twentieth century in his country, he was chosen together with Ernesto Lecuona as the best Cuban composer of the century. Internationally, he was awarded together with Joan Manuel Serrat as the best Latin American singer-songwriter of the second half of the century.
In the 21st century, for his part, he received the ALBA Award 2010. He also received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa at the National University of San Marcos in Peru, the University of Veracruz in Mexico, and the National University of Córdoba in Argentina.
Since May 2010 he has run a personal blog, also called “Segunda cita”, in which the author comments on his opinions on historical, sports, political and cultural issues. A year later he also created his own website, called “Aprendiz”s Wallet”. In it you can find, among other things, a detailed list of unreleased songs, photographs of different eras of the singer-songwriter and several interviews. In December 2022 he received the Coral of Honor of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema of Havana for his contributions to soundtracks of Cuban cinema. He has published more than twenty albums since 1975. The most recent was “I wanted to know” published in June 2024.
