Single 1971 ‘HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS OVER)’ (John & Yoko & Plastic Ono Band)
On December 1, 1971, the song composed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” was released in the United States, which went unnoticed in the pop charts. In the United Kingdom, its edition would be delayed until November of the following year, where it was nevertheless top5 and remained eight weeks in the charts. It was also a success in other European countries such as Belgium, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and France. Although the song was conceived as a protest song against the Vietnam War, it soon became just another Christmas carol, appearing on numerous compilation albums of Christmas songs. The lyrics are based on an advertising campaign carried out in late 1969 by John and his wife, Yoko, who rented billboards and magazine space to include the slogan “War is over (If you want it)”.

The cities where the campaign took place were New York, Tokyo, Rome, Athens and London. The recording of the album was the culmination of a campaign for peace that the couple began in 1969 with their “bedridden” in Amsterdam. Lennon, after seeing the great reception that his previous single, “Imagine” had, commented: “I know what to do: Accompany the social and political message with a little honey”.
