Zoot Sims – Zoot! (1956)

This LP is one of Zoot Sims’ most acclaimed albums from the mid-1950s. The rhythm section is in charge of pianist Johnny Williams, bassist Knobby Totah, and drummer Gus Johnson. The eight tracks on the album were recorded on October 12, 1956, and Zoot Sims plays tenor throughout, and the band sounds impeccable with a special sense of swing. This album is the second recorded for Blue Note by Andrew Hill. Musically speaking descendants of Thelonious Monk, the pianist and his session accompanists: Richard Davis and Eddie Khan on bass and Roy Haynes on drums, achieve an expressive lyricism and improvised music that hovers over the general rhythm of the album and based on the rhythm of the two bass players. The LP is a 1995 US reissue, and the compositions are all by the pianist.

Albert Ayler – Love Cry (1968)

Love Cry is a 1968 album by jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler, released on Impulse! Records in 1968. It was originally reissued on CD by GRP with two previously unreleased alternate takes and one previously unreleased out take. The cover claimed that “Universal Indians” is presented as a longer, extended edit, but it is actually identical to the original LP. The later twofer CD edition (paired with “The Last Album”) discards the bonus tracks.

Love Cry marked the last recorded appearance of Donald Ayler with his brother. Shortly after the recording session, he departed the band and returned to Cleveland.
