Single 1970: ‘MY SWEET LORD’ (George Harrison)
On November 23, 1970, George Harrison”s first solo single from his triple album “All Things Must Pass” was released in the United States (it appeared in the United Kingdom 7 weeks later). Produced by Phil Spector and produced by one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in pop music history, Harrison achieved a universal song that could be sung as a hymn, a prayer, a love song, a contemporary gospel piece or a perfect pop composition.
Although it was not scheduled to be published in England, the constant broadcast of the American copy on the British airwaves forced EMI to publish an edition in the United Kingdom. By then it was already an international hit and the best-selling single by an ex-Beatle in the entire seventies. It was No. 1 in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Netherlands, France. Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
On the other hand, he received other honors such as “Single of the Year” and two Ivor Novello awards. However, a few months later, Harrison had to face an accusation from the owners of the rights to an old Chiffons hit, “He’s So Fine”, whose melody was similar to that of “My Sweet Lord”. Finally, in 1976, the judge, in the final conclusions of the case, sentenced: “Did Mr. Harrison the music of “He’s So Fine” deliberately? I don’t think so. However, it has been shown in this trial that both songs are practically the same with different lyrics, and Harrison having stated that he was previously familiar with the Chiffons theme, I must consider this case as a breach of copyright laws, even if it had occurred unconsciously.”
In January 2002, two months after Harrison’s death, “My Sweet Lord” was reissued, reaching No. 1 again in the United Kingdom.
Happy birthday, Bruce Hornsby!
Today is the 71st birthday of the American pianist, accordionist, singer and composer Bruce Hornsby, born in Williamsburg (Virginia). In 1986 he released his debut album, ‘The Way It Is’, and the title track quickly reached the top of the charts around the world.

Thanks to the success of this song, the album became a multi-platinum and spawned another Top 5 song called ‘Mandolin rain’ (co-escrita con su hermano John). ‘Every little kiss’ It also worked very well on radio and in the charts. The album defined what became known as the ‘Virginia sound’, a mixture of rock, jazz, and bluegrass. Hornsby and the Range went on to win the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1987, which Bruce won again in 1989 for ‘Best Bluegrass Recording’ and in 1993 for ‘Best Pop Instrumental Piece’.

Success and fame continued with their second album, ‘Scenes From The Southside’. Released in 1988, it had hit songs such as ‘The Valley Road’ and ‘Look Out Any Window’. The song ‘Jacob’s ladder’ was also included on this album, despite having been written for his friend Huey Lewis, who managed to reach No. 1 with his version.

In addition to The Range, a group that accompanied him on his first albums, Hornsby has worked with The Noise Makers, a bluegrass music project, with Ricky Scaggs, and with the band Grateful Dead. With whom he collaborated regularly from 1988 until Garcia’s death in 2009. 1995. He has also released several solo albums, such as‘Harbor Lights’ (1993), ‘Hot House’ (1995) and ‘Spirit Trail’ (1998) without ever managing to reach the levels of popularity and success of their first works.

Since 2000 he has recorded six albums as Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers. In 2007, he released the album “Camp Meeting” with Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette as The Bruce Hornsby Trio with a jazz-oriented musical offering with covers of songs by Coltrane, Coleman, and Thelonious Monk.

On the other hand, in 2012, he composed the soundtrack for Spike Lee”s film “Red Hook Summer”. His most recent works with the Noisemakers were “Levitate” (2009), “Bride of the Noisemakers” (2011) and “Rehab Reunion” (2016). Solo he released “Flicted” in 2022 and “BrhyM, Deep Sea Vents” in 2024.
