The Davis group (billed as “The Stars of Modern Jazz”) participated in “Symphony Sid’s Christmas Party,” a gala event that began at 8:30 pm on Christmas Day. Produced by Symphony Sid, Monte Kay, and Leonard Feather, other performers included the Charlie Parker Quintet (Parker, Red Rodney, Al Haig, Tommy Potter, Roy Haynes); the Bud Powell Trio (Powell, Russell, Roach); the Kai Winding/Stan Getz group (Winding, Getz, Haig, Potter, Haynes); the Lennie Tristano Sextet (Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Tristano, Joe Schulman, Jeff Morton); Sarah Vaughan and Jimmy Jones. According to an ad in the Daily News (December 24, p. 19), George Shearing, Errol Garner, and Buddy DeFranco were also to appear; but the surviving recordings do not include their performances.

Paul Desmond, Live in New York with the Modern Jazz Quartet (1971)

Paul Desmond and the Modern Jazz Quartet appeared together on stage only once, on the evening of Christmas Day in 1971. What’s remarkable is that the concert was taped and the second half released on vinyl in 1981. The combined sound together was heavenly.
An excellent musical collaboration was made in 1971 by alto sax Paul Desmond with the jazz combo in vogue at the time: The Modern Jazz Quartet. With all the advantages of having an extraordinary alto sax like Desmond, but with the drawbacks that Desmond himself brought to MJQ’s “natural” sound, this encounter was probably MJQ’s best album with a solo artist outside the band. Desmond proves here that he doesn’t need much more than a few notes to amazingly look like he’s been playing with the prestigious group all his life.
