Single 1972: ‘A HORSE WITH NO NAME’ (America)

On January 12, 1972, ‘A Horse with No Name’, the debut single in the United States by the folk-rock trio America, was released in the United States. Although it was banned from several stations for its alleged reference to drugs, it quickly reached No. 1 on the Hot100, where it stayed for three weeks. Its resemblance to some Neil Young songs generated some controversy. The author, Dewey Bunnell never hid the fact that Young inspired him. Coincidentally, ‘A horse with no name’ was the song that replaced Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’ at number 1 on the charts in the United States.

Single 1974: ‘THE REAL ME’ (The Who)

On January 12, 1974, the third single taken from the album ‘Quadrophenia’ was released with the song ‘The real me’. This describes the main character of The Who’s second rock opera, the young mod Jimmy, subject to four different personalities and their struggle to identify between them and their’real self’.’. To do this, he talks to his psychiatrist, his mother, and a preacher to whom he asks in anguish: ‘Can you see my real me?’

Single 1981: ‘WOMAN’ (John Lennon)

On January 12, 1981, ‘Woman’ was released in the United States (in the United Kingdom it was the 16th), the second single taken from the album ‘Double Fantasy’ by John Lennon and Yoko Ono and the first released after John’s death. In a 1980 interview, Lennon stated that ‘Woman’ was an adult version of ‘Girl’. Written as an ode to Yoko and all women in general, the track begins with Lennon whispering the words ‘For the other half of heaven’, taken from a Chinese proverb once quoted by Mao Zedong. For Lennon, the phrase represented the message of the song: ‘All that talk about men and women seems like a joke to me. Both are nothing without the other. It’s another point of view of my feelings about women, and this song has been my best way of expressing it.’
