SADE

Hoy cumple 67 años la cantante y compositora británica Helen Folasade Adu, nacida en Ibadan (Nigeria), líder y voz solista del grupo Sade, nombre por el que habitualmente se conoce también a Helen.

The daughter of a Nigerian and a British woman, when they separated when she was four years old, she accompanied her mother to Colchester (England). There, she grew up listening to the music of Ray Charles, Nina Simone, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, and Billie Holiday. She studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design while also modeling for several agencies. In 1980, she approached the world of music with the Latin funk group Arriva, in which she made her debut as a composer, writing with Ray St. John the song “Smooth Operator”, which received numerous applause when Sade performed it.

The following year she went on to do vocals in the funk band Pride, in which he remained for two years. Members of Pride, an eight-piece band, sometimes formed smaller formations to perform in the small clubs on the outskirts of London. The great reception of one of these formations, Sade, Stuart Matthewman (guitar and sax), Paul Denman (bass) and keyboardist Andrew Hale, and the fact that the singer-model appeared more and more often on various covers of fashion magazines. This made Sade and his group begin to draw the attention of record labels. who months earlier had rejected the quartet”s demos for being “too jazzy”

They signed a contract with Epic Records and in July 1984 their debut album was released, ‘Diamond Life’. With tracks like ‘Your Love Is King’, ‘Smooth Operator’, and ‘Hold Hold to Your Love’, the album remained on the UK charts for 98 weeks and the US charts for 81 weeks. Sade received the BPI Award for Best Album and a Grammy for Best New Artist. Next came ‘Promise’ (1985), which spawned hits such as ‘Is It a Crime’ and ‘The Sweetest Taboo’, one of the most played songs in radio history. Like its predecessor, this album was also an international success, achieving multi-platinum status.

After the release of ‘Stronger than pride’ (1988), whose single ‘Paradise’ was Top 30 in the UK and USA, the group went on a world tour. In 1994, she received his second Grammy for his song ‘No ordinary love’, contained in the album “Love de luxe” (1992) and in the film “An Indecent Proposal”. The following year her daughter was born and Sade retired from the stage, the group continuing its activity without her, under the name of Sweetback. Under this name they have released two albums, “Sweetback” (1996) and “Stage 2” (2004), in which they have had several guest vocalists.

Eight years later, Sade Adu returned to the stage and with his group to release the album “Lovers Rock” (2000), very well received in the USA with songs such as “By your side”, “King of sorrow” and “The sweetest gift”. Fond of long breaks between her tours and recordings, in which she retires to her quiet and hermetic private life, it took her ten years to publish her to date latest work, “Soldier of love” (2010), equally well received in the US. The album reached the top of the charts. Her golden rules for maintaining his privacy, confessed in an interview, are: “Never give interviews to the gossip press, do not make fashion books for magazines, do not perform at openings and above all, do not step on red carpets”.

In March 2018, she released the single “Flower of the universe” for the Disney film “A wrinkle in time”, an acoustic ballad. A few months later she recorded “The Big Unknown” for the soundtrack of the film “Widows”, directed by Steve McQueen.
