Trio-X – Journey (2003)

Journey is a free jazz album by the American improvisation group Trio X, featuring saxophonist Joe McPhee on alto and tenor saxophone, bassist Dominic Duval on double bass, and drummer Jay Rosen. Released in 2003 on the CIMP label, it marks the group’s fifth recording and was captured live over two days in February 2003 at The Spirit Room studio in Rossie, New York. The album comprises ten tracks, structured as episodic pieces mostly composed and arranged by the trio members, blending melodic nuance with intense expression characteristic of free jazz.

Standout compositions include “Episode 2: Journey,” which highlights the group’s reticent yet aggressive interplay, and “Episode 9: Albert’s Alto,” evoking the spirit of saxophonist Albert Ayler without direct imitation. The closing track, a rendition of the traditional “Amazing Grace,” serves as an exquisite memorial to Duval’s late wife, underscoring the album’s emotional depth. Overall, Journey exemplifies Trio X’s synergy and thoughtful control, distinguishing it from more chaotic free jazz outings through its balance of delicacy and power.
