LP 1978: ‘VAN HALEN’ (Van Halen)
On February 10, 1978, the debut album of the Californian rock band Van Halen was released and their best-selling work with more than 10 million copies shipped in the United States alone.
However, at the time of its release, it did not go beyond 19th place in the charts in its country, nor 34th in the United Kingdom. Considered the American version of Led Zeppelin, the band led by singer David Lee Roth and guitarist Eddie Van Halen caught the attention of producers Mo Ostin and Ted Templeton of Warner Bros. at one of their 1977 live shows, who rushed to sign them to a contract. Recorded at the Sunset Sound Recorders studios in Hollywood, it is currently listed as one of the best debut heavy metal albums and contains many of the group’s most emblematic songs such as ‘Runnin’ with the devil’, ‘Eruption’ (with its immense guitar solo), ‘Ain’t talkin’ ’bout love’ or their version of ‘You really got me’ by the Kinks. which Ray Davies himself considered superior to the original. Allmusic critic Stephen Erlewine said, “The album set the pattern for what rock was going to sound like for the next ten years.”
