Greg Osby – Channel Three (2005)

Born and raised in St. Louis, Greg Osby (born August 3, 1960, St. Louis, Missouri, United States) began his professional musical career in 1975, after three years of private studies in clarinet, flute and alto saxophone. Hailing from a vibrant musical city, Osby showed an early interest in the performing arts and took advantage of his high school years by becoming closely involved with jazz and blues bands. In 1978, Osby continued his musical training at Howard University where he majored in Jazz Studies. He completed this journey at the Berklee School of Music from 1980 to 1983.

Saxophonist, composer, producer and educator, Greg Osby has left an indelible mark on contemporary jazz, as the leader of his own ensembles as well as a guest artist with other acclaimed jazz groups over the past 20 years. Notable for his insightful and innovative approach to composition and for his interpretation of original jazz music, Osby is a brilliant reference among today”s generation of jazz musicians. He has been awarded numerous awards and acclaimed by critics for his recordings and exciting live performances.

After settling in New York, he was quickly required as a prominent accompanist for artists as varied as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Jim Hall, and Jaki Byard. He also played for numerous ethnic music groups in the New York area.

In 1985, Osby was invited to join Jack DeJohnette”s groundbreaking group, “Special Edition”. It was as a member of this line-up that he attuned to the most challenging aspects of his conception in a musical situation without limits or restrictions. To the point, as Osby himself states, of marking a decisive turning point in his development as an artist.

In 1987, Greg Osby signed his first contract with a little-known German label, JMT (Jazz Music Today). From this situation, he feels that it will finally be possible for him to document life as he perceives it through music. A realm of free creativity in which to do what you see fit. He recorded four albums with that company. Osby signed to Blue Note Records in 1990 and has since recorded fifteen titles with that label as a leader. From the sense of the street and the language of a generation, Osby has sketched numerous musical essays subject to a contemporary soundtrack, using the improvisational nature inherent in jazz as a connecting thread. On “Channel Three”, his latest work with Blue Note, Osby presents his music in trio format and is accompanied by special guests, Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums, and a newcomer to the international jazz scene, bassist Matt Brewer.

Muhal Richard Abrams/George Lewis/Roscoe Mitchell – Streaming (2005)

Streaming is an album by Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis, and Roscoe Mitchell recorded in 2005 and released on the Pi Recordings label in 2006.

Prior to the session, the musicians had worked together since 1971, and had participated in the recording of albums such as Abrams’s Spihumonesty, Mitchell’s Nonaah, and Lewis’s Shadowgraph. The recording came about as a result of the success of the trio’s extended improvisation at the 2003 Venice Biennale.

Abrams described the album as “a vintage collaboration,” and commented: “the respect that transpires between us on the stage, the respect for the improvised space that we use, is special. Of course, they’re virtuoso musicians, but I’m talking about silence and activity, when to play and when not to play, just from instinct and feeling and respect.”
