1983: ‘BEAT IT’ (Michael Jackson)
On February 14, 1983, “Beat it” was released in the United States, the third single taken from Michael Jackson”s album “Thriller”. Produced by Quincy Jones, he encouraged Michel to include a rock track on the album. Years later Jackson said: “I wanted to write a song, which I would buy myself if I had to buy a rock song… and I wanted the kids to really enjoy it, both schoolchildren and college students.” The track includes a guitar solo performed by Eddie Van Halen.
The single sold over eleven million copies worldwide and was No. 1 on the Hot100 for three weeks. It was also a success in Europe, reaching No. 1 in Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1984 “Beat it” won two Grammy Awards in the categories of record of the year and best male rock vocal performance. It is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”s list of “the songs that shaped rock and roll”.
LP 1985: ‘WHITNEY HOUSTON’ (Whitney Houston)
On February 14, 1985, the debut album of singer Whitney Houston was released under the Arista Records label. Although the initial response to the album was quite lukewarm, it gradually established itself in the charts and a year later it reached No. 1 staying on it for 14 weeks. It was an international success, spawning three No. 1 singles, ‘Saving All My Love to You’, ‘How Will I Know’ and ‘Greatest Love of All’ and sold more than 30 million copies.
