Who composed “My Funny Valentine”? The jazz standard story.
My Funny Valentine was written in 1937 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart as one of the songs in the Broadway musical Babes in Arms. It was made into a film two years later in a film of the same title starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. Despite this, the song took on its own entity and has ended up being one of several jazz standards of the 30s, part of the usual repertoire, written by Rodgers and Hart.
My Funny Valentine has been performed by all the big names in jazz, such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, and has had multiple versions, but perhaps the most popular is the one made by trumpeter and singer Chet Baker. We see how she performed it at a concert in Tokyo in 1987 and also how she was covered by Miles Davis, the great singer Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra.
