LP 1982: ‘THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK’ (Simon & Garfunkel)

On February 16, 1982, the double album ‘The Concert in Central Park’ by the duo Simon & Garfunkel recorded in September 1981 was released. Paul and Art had teamed up again to hold a free benefit concert in New York’s Central Park in front of more than half a million people. The proceeds from the event were used to fund the development and maintenance of the deteriorated green spaces of midtown Manhattan.

In total they performed 21 songs, including classics such as ‘The sound of silence’, ‘Mrs. Robinson’ and ‘The boxer’, as well as songs from Paul’s solo career such as ‘Kodachrome’, ‘Late in the evening’ and ‘American tune’. The album was No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than two million copies in the United States alone. In France it exceeded one million sales. Despite the success of the concert and the album, personal tensions meant that the duo did not decide to continue with the reunification that would not occur again (and only for a series of concerts) until ten years later.
