LP 1971: ‘THE YES ALBUM’ (Yes)
On February 19, 1971, the third studio album by progressive rock band Yes was released in the United Kingdom on Atlantic Records. It was Tony Kaye’s last work with the group until his return in 1983 and the first to feature Steve Howe, who had replaced Peter Banks in 1970.
The band had already released two unsuccessful albums with Atlantic and the label was considering terminating their contract. However, ‘The Yes Album’ was their definitive commercial accolade and reached the top 5 in the UK and Top 40 in the USA.
Single 1971: ‘ANOTHER DAY’ (Paul McCartney)
On February 19, 1971, Paul McCartney’s first single as a solo artist was released. It was the first song to be recorded during the sessions for the album ‘Ram’ and featured David Spinozza on electric guitar, Denny Seiwell on drums and his wife Linda on backing vocals, also credited as co-writer of the song. In a similar vein to ‘Eleanor Rigby’, Paul describes in the song the routine and sad life of a stranger and the social alienation she suffers in New York City.
The B-side included was the song ‘Oh woman, oh why’ in which McCartney exhibited her vocal qualities. The single was top 5 on the American Hot 100 and No. 2 in the UK. Although they came from the ‘Ram’ sessions, they were not included on the original 1971 album but were included in later editions and remasters.
