On February 22, 1977, the Eagles band”s single album “Hotel California” was released, taken from the album to which it gave its name. It was his fourth No. 1 on Billboard”s Hot 100 and is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”s list of “the songs that shaped rock & roll”.

Todos Santos is a tiny town on Mexico”s Pacific coast. Apart from a few cacti there is nothing in the town that could attract anyone, least of all tourists. This situation changed drastically in the mid-eighties, when rumors arose that one of the most famous and emblematic songs in history was conceived in the only hotel in town, the “California” hotel.

The owner of the business, Ray di Genaro, does not deny the rumor. On the contrary, he continues to feed it by playing the Eagles song on his old record player over and over again, turning it into perennial hotel ambient music.

Anyone who wants to hear the “official” story only has to come to Todos Santos and it will be told in detail: In the early seventies, the drummer of the band Eagles, Don Henley, paid two dollars to spend the night at the hotel. There he came up with the idea to compose the song that narrates his arrival in the town tired and requiring a place to rest. so when he saw the hotel, it seemed like paradise. There, standing on the threshold, before crossing it, he heard the mission bell, a young woman received him, lit a candle and showed him the way to his resting place, listening as he said “welcome to the California hotel, where it is always spring”, referring to the pride of all Santos about its good weather.

And there are many who want to hear the story first-hand. Suddenly, many tourists who used to travel further south to Cape San Lucas, now decide to take a tour of Todos Santos to take a look at the “famous” hotel. Souvenir shops and restaurants flourished everywhere and the town experienced an unusual tourist splendor. And all thanks to a song.

But there is a small problem: Don Henley never set foot in Todos Santos. Nor had his Eagles teammates heard of or set foot in that spot. In addition, it was Don Felder who actually composed the song at his home in Malibu one day in July 1975. Henley and Frey later helped with the lyrics.
