Today is the 49th birthday of British singer and songwriter Chris Martin, born in Exeter (England), leader and lead singer of the alternative rock group Coldplay. Recognized as one of the best musicians of his generation, compared to Thom Yorke and Freddie Mercury, Martin stands out for the great control of his live voice, his high vocal range and his ability to use falsetto. In addition to being considered a great performer, he is the main composer of the band.

Coldplay is a British Britpop band formed in London in 1996. The group consists of Chris Martin (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Jon Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass) and Will Champion (drums, backing vocals and other instruments). Coldplay”s early work caused the band to be repeatedly compared to artists such as Oasis, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, INXS, U2 and Travis. They achieved international success with the release of their single, ‘Yellow’, followed by ‘Trouble’, both contained in their debut album, ‘Parachutes’ (2000), nominated for the Mercury Prizes.

Their second album, ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’ (2002) is their biggest bestseller to date, and contained songs such as ‘In my place’ y ‘The scientist’.
The album won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Rock Album in 2003. In December 2003, readers of Rolling Stone Magazine chose Coldplay as the best artist and the best band of the year. Around that time, the band performed a cover of The Pretenders” 1983 song “2000 miles”, which they made available for download on their official website. It was the most downloaded song of that year, and the proceeds this brought to the band were donated to Future Forests and campaigns to prevent armed crime.

Coldplay spent considerable time away from the stage in 2004, taking a break from touring and preparing to record their third album. At the Grammy Awards that year, Coldplay won the award for best album of the year for their single ‘Clocks’, taken from their second album.
‘X&Y’, his third album, was released in 2005 in the USA and the United Kingdom. The album became the best-selling album of 2005, with 8.3 million copies sold worldwide. The album’s release was preceded by the single, ‘Speed of sound’.

Two more singles were released that year: ‘Fix You’ and ‘Talk’. ‘X&Y’ reached No. 1 in twenty countries. However, the critical reaction to the album was not as enthusiastic as that of its predecessor. Critic Jon Pareles of the New York Times described Coldplay as ‘the most insufferable band of the time’.
In 2005, he collaborated with Nelly Furtado and composed ‘All good things (Come to an end)’ for her album ‘Loose’. After the performance of the two at the Glastonbury Festival in 2002, rumors were created that they could be a couple, although Furtado joked that ‘Yes, he is my boyfriend; he just doesn’t know it yet.’ Chris has been married to American actress Gwyneth Paltrow since December 2003 and has two children with her, Apple and Moses.

In October 2007, Coldplay began work on their fourth studio album, ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’, with Brian Eno as producer. To take a break from recording, the band toured Latin America in early 2007, playing in Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Mexico. After recording in churches and other venues in Latin America and Spain during their tour, the band said their album would have Hispanic influences. ‘Violet Hill’ was the first single taken from the album, which was available for free on Coldplay’s official website for a week, reaching two million downloads.
‘Viva la vida’ was released exclusively on iTunes. It was Coldplay’s first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and in the United Kingdom. The album ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’ was released in June 2008 and three days later it had already reached No. 1 in the British charts. A few weeks later, the same thing was happening in half the world.
Their fifth studio album, originally scheduled for the end of 2009, was delayed and in 2010 Coldplay released the single “Christmas lights”. “Mylo Xyloto” was finally released on October 24, 2011. To date, six singles have been released from the album, including No. 1 “Paradise” and “Princess of China”, a song on which Rihanna collaborates.

“Ghost Stories” was released in May 2014 and previously appeared as a preview of the single “Midnight”. In December 2015 what – in the words of Chris Martin – was possibly the final album of the band was released: “A Head Full Of Dreams”: “It is our seventh album and we see it as the last Harry Potter book or something like that”. However, in September 2019 they announced a new work, this time double: “Everyday Life”, released in November of that same year. In 2021 they released “Music of the Spheres” and their most recent release was “Moon Music” in October 2024 which was No. 1 in the British charts like the previous nine albums.
