Who is John Mayer?

John Mayer is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who rose to fame in the early 2000s with acoustic pop hits like “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” Over time, he shifted his focus toward blues and rock, becoming widely regarded as one of the most technically skilled guitarists of his generation.

Since 2015, he has also been a key member of Dead & Company, touring with former members of the Grateful Dead. Beyond music, he is a prominent watch collector and a frequent contributor to the horology world.

What is the John Mayer’s specific gear (guitars and amps)?

John Mayer’s “honeyed” blues tone is built on a foundation of high-wattage, high-headroom amplifiers and single-coil guitars, creating a sound characterized by pristine clarity and a “scooped” midrange

He primarily uses his gear as a “big clean microphone,” relying on a complex pedal board to add grit and warmth rather than using an amp’s built-in distortion.

Core Guitars

Mayer’s electric sound is synonymous with the single-coil pickup, which provides the “glassy” highs and “quacky” response essential to his style.

  • PRS Silver Sky: His current primary instrument, developed with Paul Reed Smith as a modern “reboot” of a vintage 1963-1964 Stratocaster. It features custom 635JM pickups designed for full, round tones without harsh high frequencies.
  • Fender Stratocasters: For most of his career, he used Fender Strats, most notably his “Black1” (a reliced black Custom Shop model) and a vintage 1964 Sunburst.
  • Signature Features: His signature guitars often feature “Big Dipper” pickups, which have a “scooped” midrange to allow the bass and treble to ring out with more clarity.

Amplifiers: The “Clean Machine”

Mayer typically uses a combination of multiple high-end tube amplifiers simultaneously to add depth and width to his live sound.

  • Dumble Steel String Singer: The “holy grail” of his collection. Known for its massive headroom and “3D” piano-like quality, it remains clean even at high volumes.
  • Two-Rock Signature: During the Continuum era, he used a custom 100-watt Two-Rock head based on their Custom Reverb model, designed for exceptional “bandwidth” and rich harmonics.
  • PRS J-MOD 100: A 100-watt signature amp designed to be a versatile “blank canvas” for his pedals, offering high headroom and incredible articulation.
  • Fender “Blackface” Reissues: He frequently uses ’65 Deluxe Reverbs and ’65 Super Reverbs for their classic “honeyed” American tone.

Pedalboard Essentials

To achieve a “warm breakup” without losing the clarity of his clean amps, Mayer “stacks” specific gain pedals.

  • Ibanez TS10 Tube Screamer: His preferred overdrive for a mid-range boost that makes lead lines “sing”.
  • Klon Centaur: A legendary “transparent” overdrive used to add harmonic richness and a subtle kick to his other drive pedals.
  • Keeley Katana Boost: Often cited as his “secret weapon,” this provides a clean volume jump for solos without changing the underlying tone.
  • Way Huge Aqua-Puss: An analog delay used primarily for a “slapback” effect to add spatial depth and warmth.
