LP 1956: ‘ELVIS PRESLEY’ (Elvis Presley)
On March 23, 1956, Elvis Presley’s first album was released in the United States under the RCA label. It spent ten weeks at No. 1 on the charts and was the first rock & roll album to reach the top spot and surpass one million sales. Produced by Steve Sholes, Chet Atkins and Scotty Moore on guitar, Bill Black on bass, Shorty Long on piano and D.J. Fontana on drums participated as musicians.
LP 1973. ‘LARK’S TONGUES IN ASPIC’ (King Crimson)
On March 23, 1973, King Crimson’s fifth album was released in its third incarnation. Fripp surrounded himself this time with drummer Bill Bruford (ex-Yes), vocalist and bassist John Wetton (ex-Family), violinist David Cross and percussionist Jamie Muir. The latter flamboyant character came up with the strange title of the album. Although it was not a resounding success – No. 61 in the US and No. 20 in the UK – it is still considered one of the pillars of progressive rock.
LP 1973: ‘FOR YOUR PLEASURE’ (Roxy Music)
On March 23, 1973, the second album by British glam rock band Roxy Music was released by Island Records. It was the last work of the band in which they had the synthesizer specialist and sound engineer Brian Eno, who would leave the group next to continue as a soloist. The album reached No. 4 in the English charts and is considered one of the great British albums in history.
Single 1973 ‘MY LOVE’ (Paul McCartney & Wings)
On March 23, 1973, the single ‘My love’ was released in the United Kingdom, a song composed by Paul dedicated to his wife Linda, also a member of the band, taken from the album ‘Red Rose Speedway’, Wings’ second work recorded at Abbey Road that had Alan Parsons as recording engineer. After the poor reception of their debut as a group, ‘Wild Life’, Paul expanded the line-up to five members by adding Northern Irish guitarist Henry McCullough. Not given to musical concessions (Paul even wrote guitar solos), in this case he did accept the alternative offered by McCullough for the solo, recognizing the quality of it. ‘My Love’ was No. 1 on the American Hot100 and top10 in the UK.
