Bill Evans” rendition of “Danny Boy” is considered one of the most poignant and technically rich versions in jazz history. Although the melody is a standard of traditional Irish music (based on the “Londonderry Air”), Evans transformed it into deep introspection on the piano.

Here are the key facts about these recordings:

The most famous recording (1962): This solo piano version is especially famous. It was recorded in April 1962 in New York City, shortly after the tragic death of its double bassist Scott LaFaro. Many critics and listeners feel in this performance Evans” personal pain.

Albums where it is found:
Originally, it was released posthumously on albums such as Time Remembered (Milestone, 1983) and later on the compilation The Complete Riverside Recordings.
He also appears on the album Empathy (1962), where Evans played with Shelly Manne and Monty Budwig.

Style and duration: The solo version stands out for its long duration (more than 10 minutes in some editions) and for its masterful use of harmony and silences, which force the listener to “wait” and hear each note.

It is a fundamental piece to understand the lyricism and sensitivity that defined Bill Evans as the “poet of the piano”.
