LP 1969: ‘NASHVILLE SKYLINE’ (Bob Dylan)
On April 9, 1969, 'Nashville Skyline', Bob Dylan's ninth album, was released in the United States, a strange or, at least curious, work coming from Dylan. If it had been a Gordon Lightfoot or perhaps Willie Nelson album, the reviews would have been positive, but coming from Dylan, his fans and critics frowned as they expected something else. The vast majority rejected the album at the time, which according to them, offered flat, mediocre songs full of clichés. It still reached number three on the US album charts and was their fourth No. 1 in England.
LP 1984: ‘RECKONING’ (R.E.M.)
On April 9, 1984, the second album of the band from Athens, Georgia was released in the United States. After the extraordinary reception of their debut album 'Murmur' by critics who named it 'album of the year', Michael Stipe rushed to compose new songs in a particularly creative era of the band. To the point that it was considered the recording of a double album.
Recorded at the Reflection Sound Studio in Charlotte, North Carolina in December 1983, producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon attempted to capture the sound of the group's live performances and used a binaural recording technique on several tracks. It was one of the most anticipated sequels of the decade on the student radio stations of American universities. The critics were, as in the case of 'Murmur', also unanimous, in this case giving it the highest score by most specialized media. Commercial radio and MTV were still not paying attention to Stipe's band, however the album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the charts for a year. In the United Kingdom it did not exceed 91.
