LP 1983: ‘MURMUR’ (R.E.M.)

On April 12, 1983, "Murmur" was released, the debut album of the band formed in 1980 in Athens (Georgia) by Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Bill Berry. Recording began in December 1982 but the group was not comfortable with the excessive technical perfectionism with which Stephen Hague, the producer assigned to them by the I.R.S. record label, conducted the sessions. Nor was the band"s desire to use synthesizers or include traditional guitar solos in their songs.

Stipe suggested to the label"s executives to try out the tandem of producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon at Reflection Studios in Charlotte, North Carolina. After recording a test there, I.R.S. gave the go-ahead and in January 1982 the final sessions began. Easter and Dixon decided not to alter the original sound of the group and only a few repetitions of the vocal track were performed. With a new sound in the American music scene characteristic of the first wave of American alternative rock, built on the chords of Peter Buck"s Rickenbacker and Stipe"s insistent melodies with dark lyrics, "Murmur" caused a sensation among critics. It was top 30 on Billboard and Rolling Stone magazine named it album of the year ahead of albums such as M. Jackson"s "Thriller", Police"s "Synchonicity" or U2"s "War". For the first single that was extracted, "Radio free Europe", released in June of the same year, a video was shot that was widely broadcast by the then young MTV.
