Camille Saint-Saëns’ Calme des nuits, Op. 68 No. 1 (1882), is a luminous, short a cappella chorus for mixed voices (SATB) that evokes a serene night scene. It features sustained lines, delicate textures, and a subtle emotional pivot towards a poetic, tranquil mood, making it a masterpiece of French part-songs.
Key Analysis Features
- Context: Composed in 1882 and published in 1883, it is the first of a diptych, paired with Les fleurs et les arbres.
- Atmosphere & Tone: The piece is described as deeply peaceful, creating a nocturnal, airy, and reflective soundscape.
- Musical Structure: It is marked by a "stirring emotional gear-shift" at the phrase "L’éclat du soleil," shifting from a calm depiction of night to a more intense poetic sentiment.
- Choral Demands: While accessible, it requires high control of dynamic levels and choral blend to achieve the delicate, sustained lines (soprano, alto, tenor, bass).
- Lyrics: The text, often associated with imagery from poet Henri Cazalis (though the work itself is a part-song), evokes a "vast shimmering of worlds" and "great silence of dark caverns".
- Performance Notes: There are variations in the opening bars across different editions regarding how the basses and upper voices (ATB) enter, with some versions featuring staggered entries.
Performance Example
- Hyperion Records provides a notable recording by the King’s Singers.
- Chandos Records features the work in their "Saint-Saëns: Messe de Requiem / Partsongs" collection, often noted for its delicate and full-bodied choral singing.
This work is celebrated for its peaceful nature, often deemed "more pacific than a certain ocean," exemplifying Saint-Saëns’ lyrical capability in a concise, choral form.
Calme des nuits op. 68 no 1 The calm of night
Calme des nuits, fraîcheur des soirs,
Vaste scintillement des mondes,
Grand silence des antres noirs
Vous charmez les âmes profondes.
L’éclat du soleil, la gaieté,
Le bruit plaisent aux plus futiles ;
Le poète seul est hanté
Par l’amour des choses tranquilles
Translation:
The calm of night, the cool of evening,
Immense scintillation of the planets,
Great silence of dark caverns
Bewitching profound souls.
Bursts of sunlight, gaiety,
Noise – such may please the frivolous: Only
the poet is haunted
By a love for the quiet things.

Compositional style
Today Saint-Saëns is considered a composer of eclectic and refined spirit. His works have been described as logical and clean, with solid and balanced architecture. The piano work, although not as profound or emotional as that of some of his contemporaries, constitutes the stylistic continuity between Liszt and Ravel. He has also been considered "the most German of French composers", because of his fantastic skill in thematic elaboration.
His music, which follows the classical French tradition, is elegant and precise in detail and form, and combines the lyrical style of nineteenth-century French music with a higher formal quality. Although the style of his later works was considered obsolete, Saint-Saëns had initially explored many new forms. His works are closely linked to the classical tradition, and some have considered him a precursor of musical neoclassicism
