Who is John Mayer?
John Mayer is a highly acclaimed American singer, songwriter, and virtuoso guitarist known for his transitions between commercial pop, acoustic rock, and deep-rooted blues. After breaking out in the early 2000s as an acoustic pop sensation, he re-established his identity as a modern blues master and eventually became a pivotal member of the Grateful Dead offshoot group, Dead & Company. He is currently working on his upcoming solo studio album.
Musical Evolution & Solo Career
Mayer rose to mainstream prominence with his multi-platinum debut album Room for Squares (2001) and follow-up Heavier Things (2003), earning early career Grammys for hits like "Your Body Is a Wonderland" and "Daughters".
Seeking to prioritize his guitar mastery and love for the blues, he formed the John Mayer Trio alongside legendary session musicians Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan in 2005. This raw, blues-rock direction culminated in his critically acclaimed 2006 masterpiece, Continuum, which features definitive tracks like "Gravity" and "Waiting on the World to Change".
Dead & Company
In 2015, Mayer partnered with Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann to form Dead & Company. Stepping into the massive role originally held by Jerry Garcia, Mayer won over skeptical fans with his intricate improvisational playing. Following a series of massive stadium tours and high-profile residencies at The Sphere in Las Vegas, Mayer recently paid an emotional tribute to Bob Weir, who passed away in January 2026.
