Blind by birth and classical training musician, George Shearing (August 13, 1919, Battersa, London - February 14, 2011, New York), approached jazz in adolescence, after listening to some Art Tatum albums, Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson, pianists for whom he always felt admiration. His beginnings were in some nightclubs in London with small irrelevant formations and the jump to fame gave him when he was invited to participate in the Great Orchestra of Ted Heath. Shortly after he also played in the Berg Ambrose and Claude Bampton formations.

Already affirmed as one of the most brilliant pianists in London, he was discovered by Leonard Father, who helped him record his first albums that increased his fame becoming the best British pianist of his time. In 1939, he recorded a series of piano alone highlighting the theme: Prety Girl is like a melody »that some critics considered one of the best themes of the European jazz in those years. During World War II, he touched and recorded in London with the violinist, Stéphane Grappelli in unforgettable sessions.

In 1946, and invited by his discoverer, Leonard Father, he moved during the time that the United States War lasted, deciding to subsequently settle in New York. His musical activity in America began accompanied by Cante Sarah Vaughan and also offered some concerts with Oscar Petifford, Kenny Clarke or Franco Buddy. In 1949, he gathered a quintet in his name to participate in a recording for Discovery.

That initiative had such success, which decided to keep that formation active, consolidating its quintet among the best New York combos. That group was formed by the vibrafonist, Margie Hyams, the guitarist, Chuck Wayne, the bass player, John Levy and the drummer, Denzil Best. With that group he recorded in the fifties, an extraordinary musical repertoire, highlighting: "East of the Sun", "SEPTERmber in the Rain" or the classic "Lullaby of Birdland", then turned into a standard of modern jazz. For their quintet, among others, musicians such as Cal Tjader, Toots Thielemans or Don Elliot.

His record recordings were always exquisite, highlighting the record recorded with the singer Peggy Lee in 1959 " Davis to the trumpet and Cannonball Adderley to the sax. The following year, he formed a trio with the bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernel Fournier.

In 1961, he had a wonderful encounter with the pianist and singer, Nat King Cole, recording one of the last jazz code albums. Before, in 1960, he also had another extraordinary encounter with a singer; It was on the record recorded with Nancy Wilson entitled: "The Swingin's is mutual" for Capitol. With the passage of time, his jazz facet was declining little by little and is currently withdrawn from all activity.
