Hanon books are foundational piano technique guides, while Modern Hanon books are updated versions designed to suit contemporary pedagogical and ergonomic standards
Hanon Books: The Original
The original book is The Virtuoso Pianist in Sixty Exercises, written by French composer Charles-Louis Hanon in 1873.
- What they are: A collection of 60 repetitive, patterned finger exercises designed to build finger strength, agility, independence, and wrist flexibility.
- How they work: The exercises start simple and get progressively harder. Each pattern is usually played up and down the keyboard.
- Popular Editions: You can find these in various formats, such as the widely published Alfred Publishing Hanon Complete on Amazon or the Schirmer's Library Edition on Amazon.
Modern Hanon Books: The Updates
Over a century after Hanon published his original exercises, piano technique and ergonomic science evolved. Modern Hanon books take Hanon's original melodic shapes and update them for the 21st century to help prevent injury and build more relevant physical coordination.
- Hanon-Faber (The FJH Pianist's Guide): Heavily utilized by teachers, this series provides context, anatomical awareness, and practice patterns that help prevent the stiff and rigid movements sometimes caused by the original repetitive exercises.
- Hanon Revisited (Gold and Fizdale): This modern take modifies Hanon's 60 exercises to prepare students for the more complicated technical demands of modern and advanced classical piano repertoire.
- The New Virtuoso Pianist (Randall Faber): A streamlined approach often used in modern pedagogical methods, adapting the exercises to make them more musical and physically ergonomic.
Publishers adapted the original repetitive formula to fit modern jazz harmony and alternative fretboards. These variants build genre-specific muscle memory.
Jazz Hanon Books
These books apply classical mechanics to swing feels and syncopated rhythms.
- Scales: Jazz Hanon by Peter Deneff for blues scales and angular lines.
- Chords: Jazz Chord Hanon by Peter Deneff for comping progressions and voicings.
- Latin Jazz: Latin Hanon by Peter Deneff for syncopated rhythms and montunos.
Hanon for Other Instruments
Authors translated the exercises for unique physical techniques.
- Guitar: Guitar Hanon by Peter Deneff for picking and string crossing.
- Bass Guitar: Bass Hanon by Scott Barnard for left-hand finger patterns.
- Woodwinds: Tailored woodwind patterns for evening out saxophone fingerings.
