Keith Jarrett’s solo piano performance at the 11th annual Molde Jazz Festival in Norway on August 2, 1972, is an iconic, continuous improvisation known as "Molde-72." Clocking in at roughly 46 to 50 minutes, this historic performance serves as a crucial milestone in jazz history. It captured the literal birth of Jarrett's legendary, entirely unstructured solo concert aesthetic.
The Significance of "Molde-72"
- Spontaneous Creation: Unlike standard jazz setups, Jarrett took the stage at the Molde Kino with no predefined themes, chord structures, or safety nets, letting the music flow purely in a stream of consciousness.
- Evolutionary Link: This performance occurred less than a year after his solo studio debut album, Facing You (1971), and just before his groundbreaking European tours that culminated in the 1973 Bremen/Lausanne recordings and the legendary 1975 The Köln Concert.
- Historical Broadcast: The concert was masterfully preserved using a professional five-camera television production by the Norwegian national broadcaster, NRK.
Official Releases
For decades, this concert circulated mainly as a holy grail bootleg among jazz circles. However, it finally received a broader physical release as a Japanese 2-CD import set titled Keith Jarrett – Molde Jazz Festival 1972 & 1973, which pairs this concert with his equally compelling return to the festival the following summer.
