Morten Lauridsen

Morten Lauridsen is an American composer who stands as one of the most widely performed choral composers in modern history. A recipient of the National Medal of Arts, he is celebrated for creating serene, luminous vocal music that fuses historic counterpoint with lush, modern harmonies.

Key Musical Contributions

Lauridsen's music is recognized for its profound spirituality, lyricism, and distinct tonal clusters. His most impactful works include:

  • O Magnum Mysterium (1994): A deeply moving a cappella motet that has become a global staple of holiday repertoire and one of the best-selling choral octavos of all time.
  • Lux Aeterna (1997): A non-liturgical five-movement requiem mass for choir and chamber orchestra exploring the theme of eternal light.
  • Les Chansons des Roses: A secular vocal cycle setting French poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke, which concludes with the famous, popular movement "Dirait-on".
  • Nocturnes: A collection featuring the sweeping choral setting of James Agee's poem, "Sure on This Shining Night".

Biography and Career

Born in Colfax, Washington in 1943, Lauridsen worked as a U.S. Forest Service firefighter and lookout before discovering his musical vocation. He studied advanced composition at the USC Thornton School of Music, where he later served as a professor for 52 years until retiring in 2019.

He spent many of his summers composing in solitude on a remote island in Washington State, a lifestyle captured in the award-winning 2012 documentary Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen.
