Who was Tete Montoliu?
Tete Montoliu (born Vicenç Montoliu i Massana) was a celebrated Spanish jazz pianist from Catalonia, widely regarded as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians in Spanish history.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
- Born Blind: He was born blind on March 28, 1933, in Barcelona.
- Musical Family: His father was a professional musician who played with the Barcelona Municipal Band and the Liceu Orchestra. His mother was a jazz enthusiast who played records by Duke Ellington and Fats Waller at home, sparking his early interest in the genre.
- Prodigy: He began playing the piano at the age of four. He learned Braille music at age seven and went on to study formally at the Conservatori Superior de Música de Barcelona.
Musical Career and Style
- Influences: Initially inspired by classical music, he was drawn to jazz as a teenager after listening to American records by pianists like Art Tatum, Earl Hines, and Bud Powell.
- Style: His style evolved over his career, encompassing hard bop, Afro-Cuban, post-bop, and world fusion. He was known for his lyrical yet dissonant playing style and highly original compositions.
- Career Breakthrough: In 1956, he was discovered by American vibraphonist Lionel Hampton while playing in a Barcelona pub. He toured with Hampton and recorded the album Jazz Flamenco.
- International Recognition: He went on to have a prolific international career, recording extensively for European labels like Enja and SteepleChase. He collaborated with many major American jazz musicians who toured Europe, including Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Kenny Dorham, and Anthony Braxton.
Legacy
- Tete Montoliu passed away from lung cancer on August 24, 1997, in his native Barcelona at the age of 64.
- He is remembered as a pioneering figure who shaped the landscape of Iberian jazz, leaving behind a vast discography of around 100 recordings.
