Ludovico Einaudi
Ludovico Maria Enrico Einaudi (November 23, 1955) is an Italian pianist and composer. He trained at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan with Luciano Berio as a teacher in the early eighties.
Einaudi began his career as a classical composer, and began incorporating other styles and genres, including pop, rock, world music, and popular music. Einaudi has composed the soundtracks for numerous films and trailers, including Quasi amici (Fly) and Joaquin Phoenix-I am here! , the Doctor Zivago miniseries, and Aquarius in 1996, for which he won La Grolla de oro for best soundtrack. He has also released several solo piano and orchestral albums, most notably THE days in 2001, Nightbook in 2009, and In A Time Lapse in 2013.
Taranta Project, a collaborative album, was released in May 2015, and Elements was released in October. in 2015. In 2019 he published the Seven Days Walking collection releasing seven albums in seven months and in 2020, during the lockdown period, he published 12 Songs from Home, a set of songs played at home directly on his vertical plane. In September 2020 he published Einaudi Undiscovered, a selection of songs that remained hidden from fame during his career to focus the attention of the listener.
He is the son of the publisher Giulio Einaudi and Renata Aldrovandi, who played the piano like him, and the grandson of Luigi Einaudi (1874 – 1961), President of the Republic from 1948 to 1955. His career as a musician began in jazz rock, when he joined the Turin ensemble Venegoni & amp; Co, with whom he recorded two albums released by Cramps: Rumore rosso and Sarabanda. In the meantime, he continued his classical studies, graduating from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan with Azio Corghi, then perfecting himself with Luciano Berio.
In 1982, he received a scholarship to attend the Tanglewood Festival in Massachusetts. His career as a classical musician begins with various compositions, including orchestral both for the hall, to be performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival, the Tanglewood, at the Lincoln Center in New York, at the Queen Elisabeth Hall, IRCAM in Paris, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the UCLA (Center for Performing Arts), the Budapest Music Festival and others. In 1984, the premiere of ‘sul filo Di Orfeo’, a ballet by Ludovico Einaudi, with theme and choreography by Serge Bennathan, was held at the Garden of Orti Oricellari in Florence.
Einaudi writes for several sectors, particularly cinema and theater, composing the work Time Out in 1988; after this first positive experience with dance, he did The Wild Man for the Oregon Dance Company in 1990, and then Emperor in 1991. His music has its roots in classical music with the addition of elements derived from pop, rock, folk and contemporary music. Stanze, from 1992, is a collection of sixteen pieces for harp performed by Cecilia Chailly, composed over three years.
Einaudi later began using his style to compose film soundtracks in the mid-1990s. He started with two films by Michele Sordillo, somewhere in the city in 1994 and Aquarium in 1996, for which he won La Grolla de oro for best music soundtrack.
However, it was with the album Le onde that he achieved international success; in fact, it was released a couple of years later in the UK. The album is a cycle of ballads inspired by the novel of the same name by Virginia Woolf. Some of the album’s tracks have been chosen as the soundtrack for the film April Nanni Moretti, and this will be followed by a number of fruitful collaborations with the film, including Out of this world and Light of my eyes by Giuseppe Piccioni, Doctor Zhivago by Giacomo Campiotti, under a false name, Roberto Andò, to the most recent This Is England English Shane Meadows and untouchables, Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano.
With the next album, Eden Roc, Einaudi continues the experimental research, thanks also to the addition of a string quintet and the collaboration with the musician Djivan Gasparyan. The song of the same name for the album will be chosen as the soundtrack for Tiscali’s commercial. In 2001 he published the album i giorni, a new cycle of ballads, with simple and at the same time very deep melodies. The album, according to the pianist, comes from a memory of a trip to Mali, a land of storytellers and ancient musical traditions. In Mali, he will return for the festival au désert.
To bring him back to Africa this time is the Kora master: Ballakè Sissoko. And in fact the next album, Diario Mali, which sees the collaboration of Sissoko himself. In 2003, Echoes was released in the UK, a collection of the composer’s most famous songs, which reached 100,000 copies sold. In the same year, he also played at La Scala in Milan where he recorded the double live La Scala: Concert 03 03 03, containing the author’s best-known pieces and a piano version of Lady Jane of The Rolling Stones.
In 2004, a morning was released, an album signed by Decca, which reached number one in the British classical music charts. The songs of a morning hit by undulating melodies in continuous movement, with sudden accelerations and as many suspensions.
With the following album, become, he sold more than 300,000 copies; in Italy, thanks to the sale of more than 80,000 copies they won the gold record. Einaudi explained how Divenire was born after being invited, on the occasion of the 2nd ‘Festival delle Dolomiti’, to compose songs to be played on a plateau 2000 meters above sea level, in front of the Pale di San Martino during the singing event i Suoni delle Dolomiti.
The album is based in particular on three songs: become, Spring and vanish. These pieces were inspired by three paintings by Segantini: life, nature and death. Furthermore, this song was also included in the film Ovunque sei directed in 2006 by Michele Placido. becoming’s European tour ended, after more than 80 dates, at the Royal Albert Hall, in 2007, in front of more than 4,000 people. Divenire is still ranked among the best-selling albums on the iTunes music store. In 2010 some songs from the album were used as the soundtrack for the movie the end is my beginning; among the songs used we find the song Rose that accompanies the film in a central scene and in the credits.
In 2007, he composed and performed, for the album Dormi amore, the situation non è buona, by Adriano Celentano, the prologue of a finished love, the song Hai bucato la mia vita. On December 6, he received in Cosenza the ‘Riccio d’Argento’ of the XXI edition of ‘Fati di music’, the review of the best live d’autore, directed by Ruggero Pegna. His songs have been used in numerous commercials, such as Eni’s, and as soundtracks for many movies. He also composed the theme song for TG1. There are many collaborations between Ludovico Einaudi and other artists from different traditions, such as Paolo Fresu, Rodrigo Leão, Mercan Dede, Ballakè Sissoko and Djivan Gasparyan.
He has also collaborated with the Whitetree group made up of the two brothers Robert and Ronald Lippok, who already belonged to a band called ‘to Rococo Rot’, and Stefan Schneider, with whom he recorded Cloudland in May 2009, inspired by the tale of the Nigerian writer Amos Tutuola. He has performed in the main theaters of the world, such as La Scala in Milan, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, the Olympia in Paris, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Sydney Opera House in Sydney. His music has also reached Buckingham Palace, the queen’s speech, the traditional Christmas speech of the Queen of England. His compositions are, therefore, an example of Transversal music.
In fact, Einaudi was the only classical musician to participate in the iTunes festival, alongside rock bands like Oasis and Placebo. He sold over 750,000 records across Europe and with the album Nightbook reached the top of all classical music charts across Europe. In Italy, he debuted at number one on the iTunes chart and eleventh on the Nielsen chart. Some events inspired this latest work. In fact, the pianist has said that he was inspired by a concert in 2006, at the Hangar Bicocca in Milan, surrounded by Anselm Kiefer’s Seven Heavenly Palaces.
In 2010, he is master concertmaster of the Taranta night concert in Melpignano, a role also celebrated in the 2011 edition of the Salento festival. From this experience he creates a new album called Taranta Project. In November 2012 Ludovico Einaudi received from the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, the 2013 Vittorio De Sica Award for his contribution to music. In November 2013 Ludovico Einaudi was awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. The honor was given to him for his ‘international success and the originality of his compositions’. Furthermore, with the Quasi amici soundtrack, ‘Einaudi has given great support to the worldwide success of French cinema’ .
On February 9, 2014, he gave a highly acclaimed concert at the Sydney Opera House and on July 28 at the Arena di Verona, with In A Time Lapse. In 2016 he performed the new Elegy for the Arctic on a floating platform on the Arctic Sea ice in front of the Wahlenbergbreen Glacier, near the Svalbard Islands (Norway). The event was organized by Greenpeace for its awareness campaign in defense of the Arctic. In March 2019 he presents a new project ‘seven day Walking’ which includes seven albums published monthly for seven months.
He was married to Anna De Carlo (sister of the writer Andrea De Carlo), with whom he had two children, Leonardo and Jessica. In 2010, his daughter Lara was born to her current partner Paola Dallolio.
