Five unforgettable songs by the great Charles Aznavour

• Six years have passed since the death of the ambassador of the French chanson.

If when you read or hear the name Shahnourh Varinag Aznavourián Baghdasarian you don’t know who it is, don’t worry, since it is the birth name of the proclaimed king of chanson or Charles Aznavour , as he was known artistically. He was a singer, composer, actor and diplomat and even a polyglot, since he spoke seven languages ​​fluently and sang in six of them. The world of music lost one of the most important voices of the 20th century six years ago, on October 1, 2018 at the age of 94.

Of humble origins, he was born in Paris in 1924 in the middle of the French Third Republic into an Armenian family exiled to France during the Armenian genocide of the second decade of the 20th century . The singer, despite being French and having been born in France, never lost his roots and was one of the main voices of pro-Armenian activism. Such was his commitment to his people, that he became Armenia’s permanent ambassador to the UN from 1995 and from 2009 to 2011 he served as Armenian ambassador to Switzerland.

Despite having to deal with harsh criticism in the beginning for his supposedly mediocre voice and hearing that he had no future in music, he pursued his dream and was able to show everyone that he was worth a lot . He himself often talked about his beginnings and the harsh words he received, but he was a supporter of the idea that the beauty of music lies not only in the voice, but in the song itself. Briefly reviewing his more than 70-year career, there are several things to highlight: he recorded and composed more than 2,000 songs , published 300 albums in several languages ​​and sold more than 200 million of these, gave thousands of concerts in 94 countries and his songs have been covered by artists such as Elton John or Julio Iglesias .

A musical great has to be honored and on the third anniversary of his death we are going to compile five of the most emblematic songs of one of the most famous French singers in history.

1. “La bohème” (1966)

It is one of Aznavour’s biggest hits , which has been performed by dozens of artists around the world. The curious thing is that it was born as a commission to be part of the musical Monsieur Carnaval, which would be performed by the famous operetta singer Georges Guétary , but it ended up being a success separately from the musical that did not succeed. 2. “Que c’est triste Venise” (1964)

Without a doubt another of his greatest hits , which led him to sing it with singers like Julio Iglesias . Composed by the novelist and singer Françoise Dorin , the song tells about a broken love who travels to Venice to finally separate and not be able to be together. 4. “Qui” (1963)
